Ask The Gawker Nation: Plum Sykes And Her Big Ol' Box
Yesterday, we posed an interesting question sent to us by a reader: Why in the world is their a giant mail carton at Condé Nast with Plum Sykes' name on it? The carton was large enough for an entire magazine staff, yet there's one just for Vogue editor and novelist Sykes. We didn't know the non-libelous answer, so we asked you readers. Obviously, as you're smarter than we are, your responses were very enlightening. After the jump, our favorite explanations for Plum's engorged box.
·The carton in the basement for Plum Sykes is where she secretly receives future story ideas for new books. "Bergdorf Blondes" was actually ghostwritten by Paris Hilton — Plum just smartened it up a bit (you know that British humor) to appeal to the other bitchy rich-girl crowd that pretends they aren't like Paris.
· Plum Sykes mailbox is obviously stuffed with fan mail from..... Plum Sykes! She will do anything to prop up the laughable fiction that she is a PERSONALITY! IN DEMAND! AN "IT" GIRL! THE EDITH WHARTON OF OUR AGE! O the burden of it all!
· My guess is the other departments are afraid of receiving letter bombs or anthrax laced death threats from upset socialite's who refer to themselves as "Moi". They'd rather just give her her own box o' fun.
· Perhaps Plum Sykes is an upcoming magazine a sort of Good Housekeeping for expats. There would recipes for Marmite sandwiches and advice on avoiding dentistry.
· The mailbox is stuffed with free offers to take that enormous bug out of her ass.
· She probably doesn't read her mail and refuses to be bothered with it. One time she yelled at her assistant so badly that they've been too mortified to pick it up. It sits in the mail room accumulating....no one wants to do anything, because everything annoys Ms. Sykes.
· Plum Sykes is aping Anna! Would Anna have mail brought to her in a box merely marked Vogue? Jamais! Anna's mail would need to be put someplace special.
· I used to work at [redacted] and one day in sub-basement mailroom I spied the carton that said Plum Sykes . I asked a woman who worked down their why she got her own box this was pre-Bergdorf Blondes, and even Anna Wintour doesn t have her own box. With raised eyebrows and a slight roll of the eyes, she informed me that Ms. Sykes likes to work from home so all of her mail is forwarded to her there. [Ed: This is the most plausible answer, of course, but we're still wondering why Plum's box is so oversized.]
