We here at Gawker Media subscribe to the Great Man Theory of historythat, as Carlyle said, "The history of the world is but the biography of great men." (Of course, in our world, Fabian Basabe, Daniel Okrent, and Andrew Krucoff are all "great men.") So we couldn't possibly expect you to comprehend an event as magnitudinous as the (re)launch of Radar without comprehensive knowledge of the Great Men behind it. Here, then, is the inaugural installment of Radar Trading Cards, just one part of our Operation Greatest American Magazine Launch. The trading cards are free with purchase, so enjoy your Happy Meals and be sure to collect them all!

First up, natch, is editor and publisher Maer Roshan. Mark him as position 1 on your scorecard, because this frontman with the firepower is Team Radar's pitcher. (Though, frankly, we've always figured him to be more of a catcher.)

And just who IS Limited Edition Roshan?

From Iran by way of Long Island, Maer earned his hot-young-editor stripes at the Primedia-era New York. Tina lured him away to run things day to day at Talk, and he's the guy credited for making the Miramag actually kind of good just before Harvey killed it. He launched Radar with a bang in April 2003, then watching it shrivel for lack of funding just a few months later.

After the Great Crash of 2003 and for the next year and a half, no one actually believed his claims that moneymaybe from Harvey, maybe from the consortium, maybe from some crazy foreignerwas right around the corner, until he showed up with a $25 check from Mort Zuckerman last October. Not that it's surprising Mort loves him: Everyone around medialand seems to love Maerhis vodka gimlets probably play a role in thatincuding his staff, who happily got the band back together when Radar's hiatus finally ended.
