In today's New York Post, Keith Kelly reports that New York Times executive editor (and FOJ—friend of Jarvis) Bill Keller is considering shuttering the 'Circuits' section in favor of a new section dedicated to "shopping, fitness and fashion."

This is, simply, a bad idea. Say what you will about the weaknesses of the current 'Circuits' (too many stories on blogs, that nerdy 'How it Works' column is too reminiscent of an elementary school science textbook, Lisa Napoli rediscovering the internet every week, etc.), it's still a good section, especially David Pogue.

In a market already over-saturated with Lucky and Cargo clones alternating between shouting at us and cajoling us to buy more, more more, we don't need a section of shopping coverage. Besides, Sunday is the day for lifestyle envy in The Times: spreading it over the week will only diffuse the power of the one-two-three punch of 'Styles,' 'Real Estate,' and all those ads in The Magazine. You don't want to spread your readers' aspirational coveting so thin.

Anyway, Bill, don't kill 'Circuits' and replace it with more pieces on custom sectional sofas, the next yoga, and how to tie your scarf now. We want the old articles on monster hard drive, plasma TVs, and how to maximize your wifi.

Thank you.
