Do movies make you drink?

In the absence of a government funded study, the Times 'City' section—and, one day later, the Daily News' 'Entertainment' section—offers anecdotal evidence that Alexander Payne's wine-soaked Sideways has led to an increase in local sales of Pinot Noir, the preferred drink of that film's wine snob protagonist.

According to the Times:

"People who've seen 'Sideways' can't help but be curious about pinot," said Jesse Salazar, the store's wine director. "The way they talk about it in the movie, it's like this mystical thing in a bottle."

Elsewhere in the Times, another piece might make the director of Sideways want to drink: A. O. Scott calls it The Most Overrated Film of the Year.
