Buried inside Tom Scocca's "Off the Record" report on the sale of 'Slate' to The Washington Post Company is a heartwarming little story about a 15 year-old 'Slate' editor Jacob Weisberg working as a Congressional page under Cliff Sloan, currently his boss once again as general counsel of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive.

"Jacob was a remarkable page, because he very quickly decided that unlike the other pages, he did not particularly want to spend his time delivering the messages around the Hill," Sloan told The Observer.

We can almost picture the young wonk-to-be learning the ins and outs of democracy. It's like a West Wing spinoff! But this part is the best:

At one point, Mr. Sloan said, Mr. Weisberg happened upon a trove of original bills, some dating back to the 1800 s, that were bound for the incinerator. The page raised the alarm about the potential loss, and the Speaker of the House stepped in to spare the old paperwork from the flames.

"Jacob saved a piece of history," Mr. Sloan said.

We assume Sloan isn't referring to 'Slate.'
