A reader reports from last night's Shrek 2 DVD release bash, where the ogre and his big, green equipment begin cutting a swath to the top of the bestseller list:

Went to the big DreamWorks DVD release party for Shrek 2 last night at Spago in Beverly Hills. It was pretty much a big swagfest for industry hacks to remember to vote for Shrek 2 on the animation ballot this year...in case they were blinded by the magnificance and artistry of Brad Bird's Pixar movie The Incredibles over the weekend...

Watched armies of slimy hacks from the "Special Reports" sections of the daily trades trying to guzzle down as much booze, tender fillets of beef and tasty dessert selections and then beg for more copies of the Shrek 2 DVDs at the door so they can give it to their relatives as Christmas gifts or trade them in at Amoeba Music this weekend. Celebs spotted at the very pricey bash were the always-radiant Julie Andrews, Eddie Murphy and stunning wife, Camryn Manheim, Cameron Diaz, Red Buttons, Marion Ross, and Jayne Meadows, who was busy making a fancy Shrek ornament at the arts and crafts table. Jeffrey Katzenberg was greeting guests nervously at the door.

Someone ought to tell Katzenberg to relax and enjoy the moment. There's enough animation money out there for both him and Disney/Pixar, and The Incredibles and Eisner aren't going to kidnap his green baby.
