The 5X5 Interview - Evan Thies, Operation Sibyl
As the saying goes, it s not a convention party until someone breaks a champagne glass (or campaign promise) — and a banner is hung from the façade of an upscale hotel. Evan Thies is media coordinator for the money-shot group Operation Sibyl that orchestrated the Plaza Hotel banner stunt last Thursday. According to this Times article, Thies was arrested and charged with criminal facilitation. Apparently he s also a spokesman for a New York City Councilman. At the tender age of 24, we think he s doing just fine on the path to anarchy.
Age: 24
Location: Brooklyn
Occupation: Communications Director
1. You helped organize the now infamous Plaza Hotel "Truth/Bush" sign incident. I am curious about how this idea originated and what other protest proposals were on the brainstorming table.
The group, Operation Sibyl, is a bunch of friends from all over the country that wanted to do something important during the RNC — something that would resonate with both conservative and liberal Americans. We discussed a more specific message about the war or the economy, but decided instead to make a simple statement that everyone can agree with: Bush is deceiving America.
2. Was this a one-trick trojan pony for Operation Sibyl or does the group have a formal agenda? 'Cause if you're planning more activities I'd like to suggest kidnapping Andrew Giuliani and turning him into a modern day Patty Hearst. (In case I have to cover myself for that remark, I m JOKING. Turn him into RuPaul!)
One action, one message. We were fortunate enough to get our message across on Thursday. I'm sure though that each of us will continue to spread the word about Bush's incompetence in our own way.
3. On the same day you were almost upstaged by a group of naked ACT UP protestors on 8th Avenue. Given the opportunity to do it over again, would you have planned any aspect of the Plaza mission differently? You have to admit, it would have been pretty awesome if the rappellers were nude.
In some ways, in protests like ours, it is much more important that the messengers are as credible as the message. I think that the people who really matter in this election — the independents, the undecided voters — are turned off by naked people parading around or zealots burning flags. Those people have no chance of changing anyone's mind. And rightfully so. It is much more likely that the undecideds will listen to a message from a group like ours, a group that includes a fully clothed law student and a minister in training.
4. How much would the killing of Renée Zellweger mean to the advancement of democratic principles in our country?
I wish no harm to Ren e or any other Academy Award winner. Problem is, I'm starting to think cable news organizations are praying for it. I don't think Jonathan Swift really thought the Irish should eat their children to survive a famine, but, man, that would make a great Court TV series.
5. November prediction: Are you gonna be in jail again by the end of the year?
Hard to tell. If handing out press releases put me in a cell, then answering your questions could mean a public hanging.
