Film producer/manager Arnold Steifel flipped through his cellphone recently and discovered it was full of names he hadn't entered himself: Tom Cruise. Harrison Ford. Benicio Del Toro. Julia Ormond, Peter Bogdanovich, Lena Olin, Michael Caine, Bob Zemeckis, Robert Towne, Anthony Edwards, Arnie Morgan, Cameron Crowe, Michael Ovitz .It was almost as if God had planted his own contacts list in the phone, if God didn't hate celebrities.

Steifel, however, is unimpressed with the mystery numbers. In either a moment of extreme hubris or admirable perspective, he says, "It's not only that I don't need them, but I've reached a point in my life where I don't want them…. If you call a celebrity on the phone, all you get is a celebrity on the phone. It's not as if by calling Barbra Streisand you can sing like her." So true, so true. Likewise, if you call Tom Cruise on the phone, his army of bloodthirsty, gay-rumor-stomping litigators is not at your disposal. Trust us, we've tried.

The hunt continues for the phone's original owner. Anyone who has information can e-mail Steve Lopez at the LAT (steve.lopez@latimes.com).
