Defamer's Special Correspondent On Shy, Seemingly-Awkward Filmmakers/Daddy's Girls In Foreign Advertising sends us this dispatch about Sofia Coppola's commercial for her sparkling wine in a can, Sofia.

Not only is there wine in a can named after her, there are TV spots airing in Europe that star Miss S.

I saw it late night on cable in London.. or was it Rome? I can't remember. It was basically a 15-30 sec, single-shot spot of her sitting in a limo, all glammed up, sipping her namesake out of a straw. As you do. [Suck] I wonder if she directed herself? I smell a Clio.

Sort of mind-blowing, isn't it? The self-negating symbolism of sucking a lightly-carbonated, eponymous alcoholic beverage through a straw while cruising disaffectedly though a foreign land in the back of a limousine is at once understated and "in your face." Someone call her father and get her set up with a feature-length treatment—we're getting a whiff of Oscar number two.
