On Monday night at sushi megaplex Megu, spies saw a cranky Martha Stewart dining with friends — but what we didn't hear until last night was that one of those friends was none other than tabloid queen and American Media editorial director Bonnie Fuller.

Bonnie's been dragged through the mud all winter, with reports of staffers blowing chunks in her food and leaking info about her nightmarish late-night closings and maddening office style. But no one's giving the shrewd Bonnie enough credit.

Yesterday Slate published a (boringly-written) evaluation of the state of tabloids: taking top honors are Bonnie's papers, the revitalized Star and the National Enquirer. (Why tabloids have to be a "guilty pleasure" we'll never understand. Lighten up, ya intellectual bastards.) So it's clear: Bonnie's back, baby. Stealthily, she's taken over Manhattan while everyone was so busy calling her "over." She's the secret queen of Manhattan!

Hell, even the haters on the "I Survived Bonnie" Yahoo! group are loving Bonnie. Writes one:

I gotta hand it to Bonnie & staff, Star has really gotten good! They have pulled together a truly entertaining publication. the current issue is chock full of hilarious stuff... Stars that eat cereal!!??, William Hung makeover, The Bad and the Totally Unexplainable! MAD magazine, eat your heart out.
