The Coalition: Hungry, Hungry Hippos
You know when you're at a sample sale, and you've snatched those cute pants out of some waifish secretary's hands, but then you try them on and they suck, and when you had walked in everyone was wearing the one dress you really wanted and now there aren't any more like it? But now you're gonna buy something no matter how badly it fits, or how ugly it is?
The Coalition of Mort Zuckerman of the Daily News, adman Donny Deutsch, and their pals has been shopping for so long that they just can't stop. Their New York mag bid went bust, so now they want to spend their money so bad they're sniffing out publications that aren't even apparently for sale, like Time Out/NY and the New York Observer. Their interest in Radar, everyone's favorite magazine that never publishes and whose target market is 14 smirking jaded Manhattanites, might even be to the tune of $11 million.
The mag and paper world is fast becoming their hooker's row; disturbingly, no one knows if these guys are good johns or troubled tricks. Guess we won't find out unless Radar publisher Maer Roshan gets pushed out of their towncar early one morning with cigarette burns all over his thighs.
