In case you wanted to get paid for reading Romenesko and Drudge and chainsmoking — hey, that sounds familiar! — there's a job waiting for you on Mediabistro. Basically, some writer wants an intern to tell him who to pitch. I'm pretty sure if you can do this for him you should probably just pitch magazines your own articles, right?

Job Requirements
Are you a magazine idiot-savant? Or at least a magazine geek? Can you think of few more pleasurable activities than flipping through the pages of magazines? [Not some magazines, but ALL better consumer and specialty magazines from Mother Jones to Rolling Stone, Travel & Leisure to Wired, Glamour to Wallpaper?] Do you obsessively haunt newsstands and library periodicals rooms? Do you know who s who at which one and what kinds of things each publication is running these days? Can you instantly look at an article or idea and put your finger on a likely customer? If so, I d like to hear from you. I m a well-established writer, publishing a broad assortment of articles, from political essays to lengthy narrative features, from travel and humor to business. Editors usually like and buy my material, but I don t have the time (or regular access) to stay on top of the demographics, opportunities and personalities of the publishing market.

I m looking for someone who would like to (a) advise me on suitable markets for particular projects, and, if possible, to (b) make phone calls to verify interest at the magazines. I d settle for two people, if necessary one who knows the magazine market, and one who is good on the phone and enjoys persuading people. But I d most prefer finding both qualities in a single person. In terms of compensation, we will work something out, involving commission on resulting sales, with perhaps a small advance to get you started.

If you re already up-to-date on magazines, and stay current, then this should take very little of your time. And while you won t get rich off this, it could be a nice healthy income supplement, and plenty stimulating, to boot.

Please send a brief, focused, e-mail, explaining what you know about magazines, and any ideas you might have about how to make this work, to magsavant@aol.com.
