In the archetypal photo of one of Plimpton's famous parties printed in the Times, William Styron and Truman Capote look remarkably untortured; Gore Vidal isn't touching anyone inappropriately, and a couple of women are being allowed to actually speak.

What isn't noted in the caption is that the rest of the people crowding the picture are unpublished losers who you've never, ever heard of.
