The Editor Strikes Back
What's that delightful tang in the autumnal air? Why, it's the scent of blood from the first battles of the coming Media Class War.
After printing yesterday's letter from a freelancer, which complained about Mediabistro.com's segregated new "editors-only" party, we got a little feedback from the editing classes. To wit:
"You should let 'A full-time edit staffer AND a freelance/leper' know that there are many good reasons that senior edit types would want to avoid parties, events, sidewalks, counties, states, etc., which contained a substantial population of freelancers. But all of them could be compressed thusly: freelancers are stupid and pushy enough over the phone/on e-mail-why would I want to subject myself to their *physical presences*?
Perhaps editors would take kindlier to freelancers if freelancers didn't A) pitch in tones that suggest the editor is mentally retarded, B) didn't offer in their pitches to interview people who were dead, or C) didn't pitch a piece on a topic that happens to have been recently dissected in a BOOK that the editor she was pitching ACTUALLY EDITED. Little things like that. Hate-mongering? Don't get me started.
