New York media reporter and alleged potential NY mag purchaser Michael Wolff finally bashed back after last week's ass-pounding of his new book in the NY Post. In his delicious letter to the Post's Richard Johnson, Wolff oh-so-cryptically writes "that everything in the media world is about to change. To come apart. Even that the Murdoch era is shortly to end. That we'll soon be able to throw off the mogul shackles."

Way to work the balcony, Evita.

Sadly, today another mogul refused to shackle the oppressed of NY: a deeply and importantly unattributed item in the Daily News today describes S.I. Newhouse as "not interested" in becoming the owner of New York. The Daily News also hints obliquely that Harvey Weinstein-related Niche Media might be interested. (Niche allegedly publishes Gotham magazine, by which we mean: they're still giving that away?)

From the gals at the water cooler we hear that New York staffers are sitting tight, but if Star publishers American Media purchase the mag there'll be a photo finish in the race between firings and resignations.
