In this very special issue: John Mayer, Jay-Z, Lizzie Grubman, Art Garfunkle with David Crosby, Helen Gurley Brown, Patti Smith, Matt Dillon, the Fountains of Wayne, Natalia Livingston, Steven Soderbergh and Jules Asner, Spike Lee, Chelsea Clinton, and Maya Rudolph.
· A very pale and thin John Mayer 1:30 am last night at Lucky Strike on Grand Street with an older man. They were the only two people besides us in the entire restaurant. They looked rather serious.. sipping Pellegrino and eating french fries. John called the waiter over and asked him if it was "always this slow" and he responded that at 2 am the dinner crowd usually did slow down (with a very sarcastic tone). They left about ten minutes later.

· I saw Jay-Z stopped at a traffic light stopped at w. broadway and prince in his black range rover — playin 50 cent.
· Lizzie Grubman dining outside at Bar Pitti in the Village. Her body looked sweet, butta face...
· Just saw Art Garfunkle and David Crosby at Vivolo's on east 74th street. How very 70s.
· Cosmopolitan publisher (She's the publisher, right?) Helen Gurley Brown shopping at Crate & Barrel on 59th & Madison on Friday sometime between 3 and 4:30PM. She looked fantastic - was wearing a tight skirt suit and heels, and she seemed to be accompanied by a gentleman friend. (Is she married?)
· Saturday 6 September, 6:15 PM MacDougal Street just south of Houston west side of the street near that stoop that the school kids hang on during the week. Jen and I see Patti Smith dressed in the uniform (white shirt, rolled up faded blue jeans, black canvas high top footwear and the black jacket),full head of long uncolored hair. Funny how the required dress code
of the 1975-1979 NYC punk scene is timeless.
· Three sightings at Bungalow 8:
* Matt Dillon - shorter and less cool than you'd think [Ed. So wrong! Matt Dillon is the shizzle.]
* Fountains of Wayne - nice guys
* Natalia Livingston (from "General Hospital") - not cool at all (she nervously declined to help me try and get a friend of mine in by flirting with the door guy because she is "shy").
· In DC for the weekend (our non-home away from home) and had to get some Banana Republican socks, so we sucked it up and went to the Pentagon City Mall. Who are, literally, the first people we see in the nearly empty mall? Steven Soderbergh and Jules Asner, walking hand-in-hand, free hands clutching bags from Banana and the Gap. Presumably, he's in town for the production of "K Street," his new HBO gig, which is starting its "idea on Monday, finished show on Sunday" schedule this week.
· Spike Lee being chauffered in an enormous white Excursion, turning east on 63d from 3rd. Spike in the passenger seat, window down, reading something, oblivious to his driver nearly crushing us pedestrians as we attempted to cross the street.
· Saw Chelsea Clinton on 53rd and madison going into her office building, wearing a black business suit and sporting straight hair (japanese thermal reconditioning, perhaps?). she seemed a lot shorter than i thought she'd be, but otherwise very normal looking. almost didn't notice her.
· Friday afternoon shopping at Whole Foods, and who's in the queue next to me but cutie Maya Rudolph (a.k.a. Saturday Night Live's Donatella Versace). She was casual and adorable, with a red bandana on her head and a cart overflowing with food. I didn't want to reveal myself as a stalker, so I didn't look too hard at her merchandise, but I did notice a lot of Volvic in the bottom of her cart.
