Howell Raines and Cardinal Law: every fiber
A comparison: responses of NYT editor Howell Raines, and (archbishop of Boston) Cardinal Bernard Law, when asked whether they would resign:
From The Washington Post May 15, 2003, reporting on a meeting where Executive Editor Howell Raines answered questions from NY Times employees:
Asked by business reporter Alex Berenson if there were any circumstances under which he would consider quitting over the handling of Jayson Blair's serial fabrications, Raines said: "My plan is to have this job and perform it with every fiber in my body as long as this man next to me," Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr., allowed it.
To the editors: how could this happen? [WaPo]
From The Boston Globe, April 13, 2002, reporting on Cardinal Bernard Law's decision (at that time) not to resign :
In his letter to priests, Law said, ''My desire is to serve this Archdiocese and the whole Church with every fiber of my being. This I will continue to do as long as God gives me the opportunity.''
