Defamer Preview: Joey

An operative slipped Defamer a tape of the pilot episode of Joey, the Matt LeBlanc Friends spin-off vehicle. NBC head Jeff Zucker is betting the farm on Joey plugging the ratings hole left by Friends' departure. By now nearly everyone who didn't stick their head in the oven after the Friends finale is aware of the premise: Aspiring actor/borderline vegetable Joey Tribbiani leaves his pals in New York to finally give it a go in Hollywood.
So that Joey won't have to go it alone, the writers put Joey's sister Gina (Drea DeMatteo) in LA with her twenty-year-old, comically-expedient genius son Michael (proving that even Catholics have kids when they're teenagers). To bestow a little West Coast cred on Big Sis, she's provided with a comically-expedient, recent tit job, on which both Joey and nephew Michael are compelled to constantly comment. The pacing of jokes goes something like this: Joey's dumb, Gina's tits...Joey's dumb, Joey's dumb, Gina's tits. Gina's tits. Whoa! Hot neighbor, Joey's boner, Joey's dumb, Gina's tits.
And, surprisingly, it all sort of works. Sure, the comedy revolves around the dumb/tit axis, but this is a sitcom; that's how they work. The jokes mostly land, the characters are pretty likable (especially Jennifer Coolidge as Joey's clueless and cruel agent), and there are probably just enough laughs to keep Jeff Zucker from an early Fall suicide. And yes, it all feels a bit like Friends.
Trust us, we were prepared to hate Joey, who is dumb, and whose sister has fake tits. But based on the pilot, we kind of like the dumb guy with the sister with the fake tits. God help us, we laughed.
